BASIC LONG TERM CARE TERMINOLOGY
Skilled Nursing Care -- Specialized
nursing care provided by skilled medical personnel. It is
ordered by a physician to care for medical conditions according
to a specific treatment plan.
Intermediate Nursing Care -- Less
specialized nursing care needed for stable medical conditions.
It is ordered by a physician and is generally needed for a
long period of time.
Custodial Care (Adult Day Care) --
The least intensive type of long term care. It is usually
provided by nonmedical personnel and designed to help someone
perform the activities of daily living, such as bathing, eating,
and dressing.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Triggers
-- Activities of daily living are the activities that
most people would be able to do for themselves during the
normal course of a day. Such activities might include bathing,
dressing, walking, moving from bed to chair, using the toilet,
maintaining continence, and eating. Certain combinations of
things will trigger the benefit for long term care.
Different carriers will have different types of requirements.
